Lead Researchers

  • Dr. May Choi, MD, MPH

Dr. May Choi is a rheumatologist and clinician scientist whose research is focused on biomarker discovery and validation for prediction of clinical outcomes in autoimmune rheumatic diseases, and the prevention of autoimmune disease development and disease-related complications. Her background and training include a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology at Harvard University and a lupus fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Choi is also the Associate Director of MitogenDx Laboratory for novel autoantibody and biomarker testing for autoimmune diseases and the Associate Director of Research for the University of Calgary Lupus Centre of Excellence, which complement her research.

  • Dr. Marvin Fritzler, MD, PhD

Dr. Fritzler is a professor emeritus at the University of Calgary. Dr. Fritzler’s research included cell and molecular biology, with a focus on autoantibodies and other biomarkers. He is also the founder and director of MitogenDx, a laboratory that specializes the identification of novel autoantibodies and other proteomic biomarkers for autoimmune diseases.

  • CSRG

In 2003, a group of seventeen rheumatologists from across Canada came together and acknowledged the need to unite to better treat patients with systemic sclerosis, also known as scleroderma. The group's ultimate goal was to increase the capacity to perform research in Canada by creating a multidisciplinary, cross pillar team to perform high impact scleroderma research.

  • CanRio

CanRIO is a network of Canadian rheumatologists and researchers with expertise in the management of the rheumatic complications of cancer immunotherapy. These include the development of new rheumatic conditions which develop during or after treatment with immunotherapy, termed rheumatic immune related adverse events (Rh ir-AE) and on the management of patients with rheumatic disease who are being treated or being considered for treatment with immunotherapy.

  • Lupus Canada

Lupus Canada stands as a beacon of hope, dedicated to transforming the lives of those affected by lupus. Through groundbreaking research, powerful advocacy, and widespread public awareness, we strive toward a world free from lupus. Our commitment is embodied in our vision: to see a future where every life touched by lupus is nurtured toward hope, health, and happiness.

  • SLICC

The Systemic Lupus Erythematosus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) is an international group of rheumatologists and immunologists with special interests in lupus who have been working together on lupus research since 1991.

  • STARLET

The goal of this registry is collect information to help us improve the care and treatment of patients living with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This information will help health researchers to learn more about the short and long term effects of lupus and its treatments on our patient population.

  • Lupus Research Alliance

Lupus Research Alliance along with clinical research affiliate Lupus Therapeutics is the only organization focused on the complete spectrum of lupus research from transformative discoveries in the lab through clinical trials leading to new medications.

  • CIMS
